klondike trail, elliston

Spent the morning hiking the Klondike Trail in Elliston, the “root cellar capital of the world”. There are 133 original cellars (used for refrigeration) in the area. Ate my fill of blueberries, partridge berries and crow berries along the way and picked a basketful to make jam later.

Resonated with the catch phrase on the city limit sign as we entered: The Sea is Our Stay.

Saw a puffin–one of the last stragglers hanging about the island–but scared it off in all of my excitement and shrieking before I could snap a photo.
